The organizations heavyweight champion, Alistair Overeem was successful in defending his title by demolishing Brett Rogers in the first round. Overeem overpowed Rogers and finished the fight via strikes on the ground.
Post-fight, Overeem called out Fedor Emelianenko who fights later next month at a June event in Los Angeles.
After an exciting night of MMA in Chicago, Strikeforce undeniably has the most interesting heavyweight division in MMA. Fedor was rocked against Brett Rogers, but he showed he still has determination and punching power in beating “The Grim”.
Though fight fans got to see a great card and Fedor fighting here in the states, the fun may have truly just begun. The effort by Rogers, the win by Werdum and other factors enter into the equation. All these questions should bring the fans many great heavyweight bouts from Strikeforce. A quick look at the variables:
- Strikeforce already has a heavyweight champion in Alistair Overeem. Though he has been fighting in DREAM, Overeem still holds the heavyweight belt in Strikeforce. He’ll have to defend sooner or later.
- Rogers more than held his own against Fedor. He had Fedor hurt and came close to finishing him. He wants a rematch and Fedor said he would be willing to give it to him.
